Starting Counselling
What to expect when you Press Pause
Starting Counselling
Starting counselling can feel like a big step. Whether you’re looking for clarity, support or simply a space to think things through, reaching out is a meaningful move toward taking care of yourself.
It can also feel a little unfamiliar at first - and that’s completely okay.
Building Trust, Finding Your Pace
In the beginning, we’ll focus on getting to know each other and building a sense of trust. This is the foundation of our work together.
We’ll talk about what’s brought you in, what you’d like to get out of counselling, and what feels most important to focus on. There’s no expectation to share everything straight away - we’ll go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
You’re in Control
You don’t have to talk about anything you’re not ready for.
You’re always in control of what you share, and your boundaries will be respected. If something feels like too much, we can slow things down, shift focus, or come back to it later. This space is here to support you - not to push you.
What You Might Notice
Sometimes, as you start to open things up, you might notice emotions you haven’t had much space for before. That can feel a bit confronting - but it’s also often where insight and change begin.
We’ll move through that together, in a way that feels manageable.
After Your Session
It can help to give yourself a little breathing room after each session.
That might look like a quiet walk, a cup of tea, some journaling, or simply a bit of space before jumping back into your day. Even a small pause can help you process what’s come up.
Between Sessions
Counselling isn’t just about what happens in the room - it’s also about how you support yourself in between.
There’s no pressure to “get it right.” Just noticing, reflecting and being a little more patient with yourself can go a long way. And if anything feels unclear or doesn’t sit right, we’ll always make space to talk it through.
